This project will develop games to build conceptual understanding of key early algebra topics. The materials will be freely accessible on the web in both English and Spanish. The project will develop 4-5 games. Each game will include supporting materials for use by students in inquiry-based classroom lessons, and web-based professional development tools for teachers.

Dr. Karin Wiburg is currently the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Education at New Mexico State University. She has working in higher education for the last 20 years and is a professor of learning technologies with a focus on mathematics education. Her research involves the development, implementation and evaluation of technology-enhanced learning environmnets. Prior to working in higher education she spent 15 years as a teacher, administrator, and parent laison in public schools in Seattle and San Diego. She has written several books on technology and learning and published numerous article in professional publications. She has written and recieved over $20 million in grants in the areas of technology and mathematics education

This project is developing and evaluating effectiveness of 15 - 20 short computer mediated animations and games that are designed to: (1) increase students' conceptual understanding in especially problematic topics of middle grades mathematics; and (2) increase students' mathematics process skills with a focus on capabilities to think and talk mathematically.
