Dear Colleagues,
A recent budget memo outlines US priorities for research and development (R&D) in fiscal year 2025, emphasizing a range of sectors including artificial intelligence, economic competitiveness, social equity, and climate change. This month’s Spotlight showcases DRK-12 projects that are supporting students and teachers in learning and teaching about climate change-related impacts and phenomena. Read the Spotlight on Climate Science Education.
We hope you find one of our upcoming events or opportunities appealing. Join the editors and authors of the recently released report, Classroom-Based STEM Assessment: Contemporary Issues and Perspectives, for a webinar discussing the report's impact on STEM practice and educational research. The session is scheduled for September 26 from 1:30 to 2:30 PM ET. Register here. Additionally, we are introducing a new Learning Series focused on instructional observation. The first webinar will be on September 28 from 11:30 AM to 1 PM ET—please note the updated time. Learn more and register here.
Don't miss the chance for early career researchers to apply for the CADRE Fellows program by September 27, and for new DRK-12 awardees to sign up for the New Awardee Webinar slated for October 4.
Each year, CADRE conducts two surveys within the DRK-12 awardee community. The first survey, 2023 DRK-12 Awardee Survey, aims to collect data on how we can best support you and your project team members. Please take 5-10 minutes to fill out the survey and share this link with your DRK-12 colleagues: go.edc.org/2023-Awardee-Survey. The second survey, designed for principal investigators (PIs), will be distributed in the coming months. It will focus on gathering details about current DRK-12 projects to facilitate networking among projects and individuals and to inform the broader STEM educational community about DRK-12 initiatives, among other purposes.
A new report by the Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering (CEOSE) explores the role of intersectionality in STEM and advocates for understanding overlapping identities to break down barriers and foster inclusivity. Take a look!
Best,
The CADRE Team
