Jack Smith

Dr. Jack Smith has been the interim state superintendent of schools at the Maryland State Department of Education since 2015. Prior to that, he served as deputy state superintendent for teaching and learning and chief academic officer, where he led the Office of Teaching and Learning and was involved with early childhood; special education/early intervention; curriculum, assessment, and accountability; career and college readiness; and library development services. Dr. Smith worked for Calvert County Schools in Maryland, first as a middle school principal, and then director of curriculum and instruction and deputy superintendent. He served as superintendent of schools from 2006–13 before joining the Maryland State Department of Education. He chairs the Coordinating Council for Juvenile Services Educational Programs, Interagency Committee on School Construction, and Superintendent's Family Engagement Council, and is co-chair of the Maryland Partnership for Children in Nature. Dr. Smith has a BA in English and Communications from Eastern Washington University, and an MEd in School Administration and PhD in Instructional Leadership from Notre Dame of Maryland University.
