Proof in algebra: An example of reasoning beyond examples

It can be difficult to incorporate proof in classes other than geometry since there is a lack of history and experience with proof in such a context. This article presents a classroom episode from a pregeometry algebra class in which a rich opportunity for proof arose but went unrecognized. An alternative ending is then developed in which the students engage in proof activity.
