Describing Curricular Materials for Mathematics Teacher Education in an Online, Rich Media Platform

This chapter explores a way of describing the teacher education curricular materials being developed by mathematics teacher educators through their interaction with the LessonSketch online platform (www.lessonsketch.org). We briefly describe the platform and the larger project and then using the experiences created by two fellows illustrate the kinds of materials being created by the teacher educators. We then use Grossman’s pedagogies of practice to explore how with the materials they are creating teacher educators are representing practice, decomposing it, and providing opportunities for their students to approximate practice through the curricular artifacts that they are creating. We note that the use of these pedagogies of practice to describe curricular artifacts suggests three different kinds of representation of practice in the artifacts being created.
